Fresh Air Acknowledges Hartford’s Jazz Scene
Fresh Air’s review of TRIANGULAR, Ralph Peterson’s new trio release with bassist Luques Curtis and pianist Zaccai Curtis, gives it up not only for the “esteemed brothers” from Windsor, Connecticut, but as reviewer Kevin Whitehead puts it, “the fertile and nurturing Hartford jazz scene.” One of the progenitors of the scene, Jackie McLean, was remembered on Saturday at the Artists Collective with a 9th Annual Memorial Celebration featuring Larry Willis, Gary Bartz, and Steve Davis. And this weekend, Paul Brown, who was solidifying the Hartford scene before the McLean’s came to town in 1971, will be laid to rest with services at Faith Congregational Church in Hartford’s North End. Many communities nationwide have rich jazz legacies, but few remain as vital as Hartford’s, and it was good to hear it getting recognition on a national level through Fresh Air.
